Born in Gates County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Gates County 
at age 32, February 27, 1862. Captured at Bristoe Station, Virginia, October 14, 1863. 
Confined at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, D.C. October 15, 1863. Transferred to 
Point Lookout , Maryland , October 27, 1863. Paroled at Point Lookout on or about 
February 24, 1865. Received at Aikken's Landing, James River, Virginia, on or about 
February 28, 1865, for exchange. Reported in hospital at Richmond, Virginia, on or 
about March 6, 1865. Survived the war (North Carolina pension records indicate that he 
was wounded in the hip by a piece of a shell and was also struck on the head by a falling 
limb at Goldsboro in December 1862) Ref: North Carolina Troops 1861-1865 Co. "C" 52nd 
Regiment N.C. Troops, page 446, his unit was known as "Orapeake Guards".
