Elisha Umphlett, Sr.

Born in Gates County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Gates 
County at age 18, October 21, l861. Present or accounted for until captured at 
Fredericksburg, Virginia, December 13, 1862. Paroled and exchanged on or 
about December 17, 1862. Returned to duty in January-February 1863. 
Deserted on June 17, 1863.®North Carolina Troops: 1861-1865/CO. E, 33rd 
Regiment, page 182.  He was a Private and is on Film Number M230 roll 40 of 
the Soldiers & Sailors System. (It was said that in 1863 group accidentally shot 
Stonewall Jackson so a Lt. in the Army and Elisha deserted) Do not know if he 
had anything to do with the shooting of Jackson Riddick Umphlett was born in 
Bertie County and enlisted at New Bern on 25 Jan 1864, age 20. He was 
captured at Plymouth, N.C. April 17-20,  1864.
