He was born in Pasquotank County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting  in Pasquotank 
County at the age of 26, July 22, 1861, for the war. He was mustered in as a Private. He was 
captured at Roanoke Island on February 8, 1862, paroled at Elizabeth City on February 21, 1862 
and exchanged in August, 1862. He was promoted to Corporal prior to November 1, 1862. He was 
present or accounted for until discharged on March 21, 1863. The reason for his discharge was 
not reported.)
