William Henry Holt

This photo was taken shortly before he died at home in 1889. You can see how consumption has taken its toll. Here is information on my great grandmother Anne Mariah Holt Wallace's brother William Henry Holt of Halifax Co, NC. William Henry Holt was the son of Hiram Holt, Sr. and Wealthy Anne Irby. Hiram Holt, Sr., was the son of Temperance Holt and grandson of Joseph Holt and Nancy Brinkley, all of Halifax Co, NC. William Henry Holt (b. 1843, d. 10/14/1889), died unmarried. Served in 24th NC Regiment, imprisoned at Point Lookout, returned home at the end of the war, and later died of consumption. Exe. friend James T. Gooch. Wit. J. E. Green, J. A. Spears 324-(158) 14 Nov 1889. JAMES T. GOOCH testified that WILLIAM HENRY HOLT died with will. Estate valued at $1200. Heir: ANNIE MARIA WALLACE. J. T. GOOCH. Appointed 3 Dec 1889. HOLT, WILLIAM HENRY James T. Gooch qualified as exr. Dec. 3, 1889. Only heir was Annie Maria Wallace. WILLIAM HENRY HOLT - OBIT from the Roanoke News, Thursday, October 17, 1889: DEATH. - William Henry Holt died at his residence near town on the 14th inst., of consumption, aged 43 years. He was a private in the 24th N. C., regiment, company D, Capt. W. J. Squiggins; served through the entire war, was wounded at the battle of Hare's Hill Marsh March 26th, 1865, and being in the hospital at Richmond when that city surrendered, was captured and taken to Point Lookout. He was released after Gen. Lee surrendered and returned home in June 1865. He began to farm, which occupation he pursued until overtaken with disease. He was a good soldier and citizen; was prompt to discharge his duties and was an honest reliable man, attending exclusively to his own affairs. He was buried Tuesday afternoon at the burying ground on the place, the services being conducted by the Rev. P. N. Stainback.
