This unit was organized in Richmond County, North Carolina on April 26, 1862. 
Evidently someone in the Confederate War Department thought that Richmond 
County, was the political entity of the same name in Virginia, and this battery 
was erroneously assigned as Company D, 12th Battalion Vir- ginia Light Artillery. 
The order that affected this organization was Special Orders No. 112, Adjutant 
and Inspector General's Office, dated May 15, 1862. The company was reassigned 
as Company A, 13th Battalion North Carolina Light Artillery by Special Orders. 
No. 66, Executive Department, North Carolina Adjutant General's Office, dated 
November 4, 1863. Cap- tain Lewis H. Webb led this battery during its entire 
history.
