37th Regiment Co H
"Gaston Blues"

37th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry

37th Infantry Regiment, organized by Colonel C.C. Lee, was assembled
at High Point, North Carolina, in November, 1861. The men were raised
in the counties of Buncombe, Watauga, Mecklenburg, Wake, Ashe,
Alexander, and Gaston. The unit fought at New Bern, then moved to
Virginia in the psring of 1862. It was assigned to General Branch's and
Lane's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. The 37th saw action at Hanover
Court House and particpated in many campaigns of the army from the
Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor. It continued the fight in the Petersburg
trenches and around Appomattox. This regiment reported 125 casualties
during the Seven Days' Battles, 15 at Cedar Mountain, 81 at Second
Manassas, 93 at Fredericksburg, and 235 at Chancellorsville. Of the 379
engaged at Gettysburg, more than thirty percent were disabled. It
surrendered 10 officers and 98 men. The field officers were Colonels
William M. Barbour and Charles C. Lee; Lieutenant Colonel John B.
Ashcraft, Charles N. Hickerson, and William G. Morris; and Majors
Jackson L. Bost, Owen N. Brown, John G. Bryan, Rufus M. Rankin,
and William R. Rankin.

OFFICERS

CAPTAINS

RANKIN, WILLIAM RUFUS
Born in Gaston County' where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Gaston
County at age 38. Appointed Captain on October 6, 1861. Appointed Major on
March 27, 1862, and transferred to the Field and Staff of this regiment.

MORRIS, WILLIAM GROVES
Born in Gaston County' where he resided prior to enlisting at age 36. Appointed 2nd
Lieutenant on October 6, 1861. Elected Captain on March 29, 1862. Appointed Major
on July 30, 1862, and transferred to the Field and Staff of this regiment. Later served
as Lieutenant Colonel of this regiment.

FITE, HENRY C.
Born in Gaston County' where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Gaston County
at age 38. Appointed 3rd Lieutenant on October 6, 1861. Promoted to Captain on July 30,
1862. Wounded in the breast and left arm at Fredericksburg, Virginia on December 13,
1862. Reported absent wounded or absent sick through February 1863. Returned to duty
prior to May 1-4, 1863, when he was wounded in the breast and thigh at Chancellorsville,
Virginia. Resigned on January 23, 1864, by reason of disability from wounds. He had
"been wounded six times, three times severely." Resignation accepted on February 3, 1864.

RAGIN, WILLIAM C.
Previously served as Sergeant in Company L, 1st Regiment South Carolina Infantry
(McCreary's). Appointed 2nd Lieutenant of this company on or about October 1, 1862.
Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on October 23, 1862. Wounded at Chancellorsville, Virginia
on May 1-4, 1863. Returned to duty prior to September 1, 1863. Promoted to Captain on
February 4, 1864. Killed near Fussell's Mill, Virginia, August 16, 1864.

LIEUTENANTS

ALEXANDER, WILLIAM J., 3rd Lieutenant
Resided in Texas and enlisted at age 25. Appointed 3rd Lieutenant on November 1, 1862.
Promoted to 1st Lieutenant and transferred to Company A of this regiment on May 3, 1863.

GLENN, WILLIAM WALLACE, 2nd Lieutenant
Born in Gaston County where he resided as a merchant prior to enlisting in Gaston County
at age 24, October 6, 1861. Mustered in as lst Sergeant. Appointed 2nd Lieutenant on
March 27, 1862. Resigned on July 14, 1862, by reason of "chronic dysentery." Resignation
accepted on July 19, 1862. Re-enlisted in the company with the rank of Private in

HANKS, GEORGE W., 1st Lieutenant
Born in Gaston County' where he resided as a farmer prior to the war. He enlisted in
Gaston County at age 30. Appointed 1st Lieutenant on October 6, 1861. Resigned on
or about April 14, 1862, by reason of "chronic inflammation of the knee joint, caused
by a wound of the synovial membrane several years ago."

McKEE, GEORGE W., 2nd Lieutenant
Born in Gaston County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Gaston
County at age 18, October 6, 1861. Mustered in as Sergeant. Reported absent
wounded without leave during July-October, 1862. Place and date wounded not
reported. Reduced to ranks on October 1, 1862. Returned to duty in November-December
1862. Promoted to Sergeant prior to January 1, 1863. Nominated for Badge of Distinction
for gallantry at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 1-4, 1863. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on
February 1, 1864. Reduced to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant prior to May 1, 1864. Wounded
in the right buttock at or near Gravel Hill, Virginia on July 28, 1864. Reported absent
wounded or absent on furlough through February 1865.

MOORE, JOHN C., 1st Lieutenant
Born in Gaston County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Gaston County
at age 33 on October 6, 1861. Mustered in as Sergeant. Appointed 2nd Lieutenant on
October 1, 1862. Wounded at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 1-4, 1863. Returned to
duty prior to November 1, 1863. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on February 4, 1864.
Captured near Petersburg, Virginia on April 2, 1865. Confined at Old Capitol Prison,
Washington, D.C. Transferred to Johnson’s Island, Ohio, where he arrived on April 11,
1865. Released on June 19, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance,

ORMAND, JOHN J., 3rd Lieutenant
Resided in Gaston County where he enlisted on August 12, 1862, for the war.
Mustered in as lst Sergeant. Wounded in the arm at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania,
July 1-3, 1863. Returned to duty on September-October, 1863. Appointed 3rd Lieutenant
on February 21, 1864. Captured near Petersburg, Virginia on April 2, 1865. Confined at
Old Capitol Prison, Washington, D.C. Transferred to Johnson's Island, Ohio, where he
arrived on April 11, 1865. Released on June 19, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

ROBERTS, JOHN H., 1st Lieutenant
Born in Gaston County' where he resided as a mechanic prior to enlisting in Gaston
County at age 41, October 6, 1861. Mustered in as Private. Elected 1st Lieutenant on
or about April 17, 1862. Resigned on October 13, 1862 by reason of "chronic rheumatism"
of the left knee and left wrist. Resignation accepted on October 23, 1862.

Born in Gaston County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Gaston County at

the provisions of the Conscription Act.

ABERNATHY, JAMES W. C., Corporal
Born in Gaston County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Gaston County
at age 20, October 6, 1861. Mustered in as Private. Promoted to Corporal in
May-October, 1862. Present or accounted for until promoted to acting Ordnance
Sergeant on January 25, 1863, and transferred to the Field and Staff of this regiment.
Promoted to Ordnance Sergeant and assigned to permanent duty with the Field and
Staff on May 26, 1864.

ABERNATHY, MARION C., Private
Born in Gaston County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Gaston County
at age 27, October 6, 1861. Mustered in as Sergeant. Promoted to 1st Sergeant in
March-April 1862. Reduced to ranks on October 1, 1862. Wounded in the head and
captured at Fredericksburg, Virginia, December 13, 1862. Paroled on December 14,
1862. Reported absent on detail during January-February and July-August, 1863.
Rejoined the company in September-October, 1863. Captured at Wilderness, Virginia
on May 6, 1864. Confined at Washington, D.C., where he died on June 9, 1864, of
"diarrhea (chronic)."

ABERNATHY, MUNROE, Private
Born in Gaston County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Gaston
County at age 26, October 6, 1861. Company records dated January-February 1862,
indicate he was "at home having sent petition for discharge." No further records.

ABERNATHY, WILLIAM R. D., Private
Born in Gaston County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Gaston County
at age 27, October 6, 1861. Wounded and captured at Hanover Court House, Virginia
on May 27, 1862. Confined at Fort Columbus, New York Harbor, where he died on June
18, 1862, of wounds and/or "febris typhoides (typhoid’s fever)."

ALEXANDER, JAMES L., Sergeant
Resided in Gaston County where he enlisted on May 10, 1862, for the war. Mustered in
as Private. Promoted to Sergeant prior to November 1, 1862. Killed at Fredericksburg,
Virginia, December 13, 1862.

ALLISON, HUGH LABAN, Private
Born in Gaston County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Gaston County
at age 26, October 6, 1861. Died at Richmond, Virginia, August 1, 1862. Cause of death
not reported.

ARMSTRONG, FEATHERSTON W., Private
Born in Gaston County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Gaston County
at age 21, October 6, 1861. Wounded in the head and side at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania,

Enlisted in Gaston County on March 2, 1863, for the war. Reported present during
July-August, 1863. Dropped from the rolls of the company in September-October 1863.
Reason he was dropped not reported. Reported "absent in arrest" in November-December,
1864.

AROWOOD, BENJAMIN F., Private
Born in Gaston County where he resided prior to enlisting in Iredell County on August 12,
1862, for the war. Died at Lynchburg, Virginia on April 2, 1863, of "pneumonia."

BEAM, DAVID L., Private
Resided in Gaston County where he enlisted in Iredell County on August 12, 1862, for
the war. Deserted "while on picket" on May 16, 1863. Returned to duty in March-April,
1864. Wounded in the hand at Wilderness, Virginia on May 6, 1864. Returned to duty in
November-December 1864. Deserted to the enemy on or about March 3, 1865. Sent to
Washington, D.C., where he arrived on March 7, 1865. Released on an unspecified date
after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

BEAM, GEORGE M., Private
Born in Gaston County where he resided as a machinist prior to enlisting in Gaston
County on May 10, 1862, for the war. Wounded in the thigh at Ox Hill, Virginia on
September 1, 1862. Leg amputated. Died on September 7, 1862 of wounds. Place of
death not reported.

BEAM, HENRY SIMPSON, Private
Resided in Gaston County and enlisted in Iredell County on August 12, 1862 for the war.
Reported absent without leave in March-April 1864. Returned to duty prior to June 3, 1864,
when he was wounded in the back and left shoulder at or near Cold Harbor, Virginia.
Reported absent without leave on August 11, 1864. Reported absent wounded through
February 1865. Records of the Federal Provost Marshal indicate he was captured and
paroled at Athens, Georgia on May 8, 1865.

County at age 21, October 6, 1861. Mustered in as Color Bearer. Promoted to Sergeant

after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

CANNON, JAMES A., Private
Born in Gaston County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Gaston County
on October 6, 1861. Wounded in the right elbow at Hanover Court House, Virginia on
May 27, 1862. Returned to duty in November-December 1863. Discharged on
January 2, 1864, by reason of "anchylosis of right elbow joint; the result of a wound
received in the battle of Hanover [Court House]". [Discharge certificate gives his age as 35.]

North Carolina pension records indicate that he served in this company.

CLEMMER, ANDREW, Private
Born in Gaston County and enlisted in Iredell County on August 12, 1862. Deserted at
Liberty Mills, Virginia on April 11, 1864. Went over to the enemy on or about October
8, 1864. Sent to Washington, D.C., where he arrived on October 12, 1864. Released
on an unspecified date after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

CLEMMER, CEPHAS M., Private
Born in Gaston County' where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Gaston
County at age 20 on October 6, 1861. Died in hospital at Richmond, Virginia, on or
about June 29, 1862, of "phthisis pulmonalis" and/or "typhoid fever."

CLEMMER, JOHN M. LAFEYETTE, Private
Born in Gaston County where he resided as a millwright prior to enlisting in Gaston
County at age 25 on October 6, 1861. Mustered in as Private. Promoted to Corporal
prior to March 1, 1862. Wounded at Gaines' Mill, Virginia on June 27, 1862. Reduced
to ranks on October 1, 1862. Returned to duty in November-December 1863.
Furloughed on January 11, 1864, apparently by reason of disability from wounds
received at Gaines' Mill. Reported absent without leave on April 28, 1864. Retired
to the Invalid Corps on May 31, 1864. Retired from service on December 10, 1864.

Resided in Gaston County and enlisted in Iredell County on August 12, 1862 for the
war. Deserted at Liberty Mills, Virginia on April 11, 1864. Returned to duty subsequent
to August 31, 1864. Captured by the enemy at Amelia Court House, Virginia on April
5, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland until released on June 24, 1865, after
taking the Oath of Allegiance.

CLEMMER, LARKIN D., Private
Resided in Gaston County and enlisted at Liberty Mills, Virginia, April 1, 1864 for the
war. Wounded in the thigh at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia on May 12, 1864.
Reported absent without leave on July 3, 1864. Returned to duty in January-February
1865. Captured at or near Fort Stedman, Virginia on March 25, 1865. Confined at
Point Lookout, Maryland, until released on June 24, 1865, after taking the Oath of
Allegiance.

Born in Gaston County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Gaston County

March-April 1863. Deserted "in the face of the enemy" at Chancellorsville, Virginia on
May 3, 1863. Arrested and jailed at Lincolnton prior to September 1, 1863. Company
records dated March-August 1864 indicates he was in jail at Lincolnton "for criminal
offense." No further records.

Enlisted in Gaston County on August 12, 1862, for the war. Discharged on October 23,
1862, by reason of disability.

COOK, JOHN, Private
Resided in Ashe County and enlisted at Gordonsville, Virginia at age 19, May 1, 1862,
for the war. Deserted on May 19, 1863. Returned to duty on September 1, 1863.
Wounded in the right forearm at Reams' Station, Virginia on August 25, 1864. Retired
from service on February 8, 1865, by reason of disability from wounds.

COSTNER, CALEB, Private
Resided in Gaston County and enlisted in Iredell County on August 12, 1862 for the war.
Killed at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 3, 1863.

RANKIN, ALEXANDER N., Private
Born in Gaston County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in
Gaston County at age 36 on October 6 1861. Wounded in the head at
Gaines' Mill, Virginia on June 27, 1862. Hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia
and transferred to Charlotte on July 8, 1862. Although he was "shot in the
base of the skull", this "did not prevent [Rankin] from walking about. He was
examined by half dozen surgeons who were unable to trace or locate the
bullet, when Dr. (W. McD.] Campbell, of the Seventh Regiment [N.C. State
Troops] called me [Surgeon J. B. Alexander of the 37th Regiment N.C Troops]
to try my hand.... I placed my hand upon his forehead and told him to open his
mouth; at once I saw swelling in the roof of his mouth; it was hard and smooth.
I made a slit with a scalpel, and showed a minnie ball to the astonished surgeons.
How the ball got there without killing him has always been a mystery." He died on
July 24, 1862 of wounds. Place of death not reported.

RATCHFORD, JOHN A., Private
Resided in Gaston County where he enlisted on August 12, 1862 for the war.
Wounded in the arm and/or right thigh and captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania,
Jul 3-4, 1863. Hospitalized at David’s Island, New York Harbor, on or about July
17, 1863. Paroled and transferred to City Point, Virginia, where he was on
September 8, 1863, for exchange. Returned to duty in March-April 1864.
Captured near Petersburg, Virginia on April 2, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout,

Deserted on June 18, 1863. Returned to duty in January-February 1864.
Wounded at Wilderness, Virginia on May 6, 1864. Reported absent wounded
until December 15, l864, when he was reported absent without leave.

REYNOLDS, NATHAN A., Private
Born in Gaston County where he resided as a laborer prior to enlisting in
Gaston County at age 18 on October 6, 1861. Wounded in the right leg at
the Battle of Second Manassas, Virginia on August 29, 1862. Returned to
duty in January-February 1865. Retired from service on March 8, 1865, by
reason of "necrosis of the tibia & loss of a considerable portion of it" as a
result of wounds received at the Battle of Second Manassas.

Born in Gaston County where he resided as a cotton spinner prior to
enlisting in Gaston County at age 21 on October 6, 1861. Killed at Ox
Hill, Virginia on September 1, 1862.

wound of right hand causing loss of the use of the Fingers." [Discharge
certificate gives his age as 20.]

STROUP, WILLIAM M., Private

for the war. Wounded in the right foot at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia
on May 12, 1864. Foot amputated. Died in hospital at Richmond, Virginia on
May 31, 1864, of a gunshot fracture of the foot and "tetanus."
