51st Regiment, North Carolina Infantry 

51st Infantry Regiment was organized at Wilmington, North Carolina, 
in April, 1862, with men recruited in the counties of Cumberland, 
Sampson, Duplin, Columbus, Robeson, and New Hanover. It was 
assigned to General Clingman's Brigade and served under him for the 
duration of the war. After fighting at Goldsboro, it moved to the 
Charleston area and was prominent in the defense of Battery Wagner. 
The 51st was then ordered to Virginia, participated in the battles at 
Drewry's Bluff and Cold Harbor, and endured the hardships of the 
Petersburg siege south and north of the James River. Returning to 
North Carolina, it saw action at Bentonville. On July 18, 1863, this 
regiment lost 16 killed and 52 wounded at Battery Wagner and in 
August contained 374 effectives. In May, 1864, it contained 1,100 men, 
and in October there were 145 present. During that time the 51st lost in 
killed and wounded 160 at Drewry's Bluff, 194 at Cold Harbor, and 104 
at Fort Harrison. Very few surrendered with the Army of Tennessee. 
The field officers were Colonels John L. Cantwell and Hector McKethan, 
Lieutenant Colonels William A. Allen and Caleb B. Hobson, and Major 
James R. McDonald.

WALTER, ALFRED B.

Born in South Carolina and resided in Robeson County where he was by 
occupation a physican prior to enlisting in Robeson County at age 25. 
Appointed Captain on March 10, 1862. Resigned on August 18, 1862, by 
reason of "constitutional debility caused by chronic dysentery. . . ." 
Resignation accepted on August 23, 1862.

 NORMENT, WILLIAM STOKES

Previously served as Captain of Company D, 18th Regiment N.C. Troops 
(8th Regiment N.C. Volunteers). Appointed Captain of this company on 
August 23, 1862. Present and accounted for until wounded in the right leg 
at Fort Harrison, Virginia, September 30, 1864. Reported absent wounded 
through December, 1864.

Lieutenants

FULMORE, ANDREW C. 1ST Lieutenant

Previously served as Private in 1st Company D, 12th Regiment N.C. Troops 
(2nd Regiment N.C. Volunteers). Appointed 1st Lieutenant of this company 
on March 10, 1862. Present and accounted for until October 29, 1863, when 
he was reported absent without leave. Returned to duty in November-December, 
1863. Present or accounted for until hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia, 
June 16, 1864, with acute diarrhoes. Returned to duty on July 6, 1864. 
Hospitalized at Richmond on August 4, 1864, with chronic diarrhoea. 
Furloughed on August 11, 1864. Returned to duty in November-December, 
1864, but was reported absent on sick furlough on December 20, 1864. 
Surrendered at Augusta, Georgia, May 25, 1865, and was paroled the 
same date.

HARTMAN, JACOB W., 2ND Lieutenant

Previously served as Private in 1st Company D, 12th Regiment N.C. Troops 
(2nd Regiment N.C. Volunteers). Appointed 2nd Lieutenant of this company 
on March 10, 1862. Present or accounted for until May-August, 1864, when 
he was reported absent wounded. Place and date of wounded not reported. 
Returned to duty in September-October, 1864. Reported on duty as commander 
of the company in September-December, 1864. Paroled at Greensboro on 
May 1, 1865.

HIGLEY, GILBERT P., 2nd Lieutenant

Born at East Granby, Connecticut, and resided in Robeson County where 
he was by occupation a carpenter prior to enlisting at age 38. Appointed 
2nd Lieutenant on March 10, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded 
and captured at Cold Harbor, Virginia, June 1, 1864. Confined at Point 
Lookout, Maryland, June 11, 1864. Transferred to Fort Delaware, Delaware, 
June 23, 1864. Transferred to Hilton Head, South Carolina, August 20, 1864. 
Reported at Fort Pulaski, Georgia, on or about October 20, 1864. 
Transferred back to Hilton Head on November 19, 1864. Transferred to 
Fort Delaware where he arrived on March 12, 1865. Released at Fort 
Delaware on June 17, 1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

11, 1864. Transferred to Elmira, New York, July 12, 1864. Killed in a 
railroad accident at Shohola, Pennsylvania, July 15, 1864, while en route

 BAXLEY, WILLIAM H. R., Private - Born in Robeson County where he 
resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Robeson County at age 23, March 
10, 1862. Mustered in as Sergeant. Reduced to ranks prior to July 1, 1862. 
Present or accounted for until wounded seriously at Goldsboro on December 
17, 1862. Reported absent wounded through April, 1863. Reported absent in 
prison at Wilmington "awaiting trial" (probably for absence without leave) in 
July-August, 1863. Returned to duty in September-October, 1863. Present or

Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, June 11, 1864. Transferred to Elmira, 
New York, July 12, 1864. Released at Elmira on July 3, 1865, after taking

 EVANS, DAVIDSON, Private - Enlisted at Nichols Depot, South Carolina, 
May 1, 1862, for the war. Present or accounted for until he deserted on 
August 3, 1862. Reported in prison at Wilmington awaiting trial in May-June, 
1863. Court-martialed and sentenced to death; however, he was released and 
returned to the company on August 10, 1863. Deserted on August 11, 1863.

 EVANS, MICHAEL, Private - Enlisted at Nichols Depot, SC, May 1, 1862, 
for the war. Present or accounted for until he deserted on August 3, 1862.

 FAULK, JAMES C.,Sergeant - Born in Robeson County and was by 
occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Robeson County at age 23, March 
10, 1862. Mustered in as Sergeant. Present or accounted for until wounded 
slightly at Goldsboro on December, 17, 1862. Returned to duty in January-
February, 1863. Present or accounted for until wounded at Fort Wagner, 
Charleston, SC, July 18, 1863. Returned to duty in September-October,

16, 1864. Hospitalized at Raleigh on August 28, 1864, with a gunshot 
wound of the left arm (possibly the same wound he received at Drewry's Bluff).

1, 1864. Promoted to Sergeant in January-April 1865. Paroled at Greensboro 
on May 1, 1865.

age 35, March 10, 1862. Mustered in as a Corporal. Reduced to ranks 
prior to July 1, 1862. Appointed Musician in July-August, 1862. Reduced 
to ranks in January-February, 1863. Present or accounted for until August 
3, 1863, when he was reported absent without leave. Returned to duty in

about June 12, 1864. Released at Point Lookout on June 27, 1864, after 
taking the Oath of Allegiance and joining the US Army. Assigned to 
Company K, 1st Regiment US Volunteer Infantry.

 SPARKMAN, GEORGE A., Private - Enlisted at Nichols Depot, South 
Carolina, May 1, 1862, for the war. Present or accounted for through 
May, 1864. Various records indicate that he was wounded and captured 
at Cold Harbor, Virginia, May 31, 1864; however, records of the Federal 
Provost Marshal do no substantiate that report. Was probably killed at 
Cold Harbor.

Hospitalized at Richmond, VA, where his leg was amputated on June 
17, 1864. Furloughed on or about July 18, 1864. Reported absent 
wounded until February 16, 1865, when he was retired to the Invalid 
Corps.

 SPIVEY, SAMUEL, Corporal - Born in Horry District, South Carolina, 
and was by occupation a blacksmith prior to enlisting in Robeson County 
at age 41, March 10, 1862. Mustered in as Corporal. Present or accounted 
for until November-December, 1862, when he was reported absent without 
leave. Returned to duty in January-February, 1863. Present or accounted 
for until killed at Fort Wagner, Charleston, South Carolina, July 18, 1863.

accidentally in the left hand at or near Petersburg, VA, September 2, 1864. 
Hospitalized at Petersburg. Reported absent on sick furlough in Robeson 
County in November-December, 1864.

 WATSON, SAMUEL D., 1st Sergeant - Born in Robeson County and was 
by occupation a student prior to enlisting in Robeson County at age 20, 
March 10, 1862. Mustered in as 1st Sergeant. Present or accounted for 
until wounded in the arm at Drewry's Bluff, VA, on or about May 13, 1864. 
Returned to duty prior to June 1, 1864, when he was captured at Cold Harbor, 
VA. Confined at Point Lookout, MD, June 11, 1864. Transferred to Elmira, 
NY, July 12, 1864. Killed in a railroad accident at Shohola, Pennsylvania, 
July 15, 1864, while en route to Elmira.

 WOODWARD, GEORGE W., Private - Born in Cumberland County and 
enlisted at Camp Holmes, near Raleigh, at age 18, March 14, 1864, for 
the war. Present or accounted for until wounded in the neck and/or right 
hand at or near Bermuda Hundred, VA, on or about May 20, 1864. 
Hospitalized at Petersburg, VA. Transferred to Raleigh on or about June 
1, 1864, with a gunshot wound. Place and date wounded not reported. 
Returned to duty on January 5, 1865. Survived the war.
