"North Carolina Guards"







27th Regiment, North Carolina Infantry 

27th Infantry Regiment was formed at New Bern, North Carolina, in 
June, 1861, as the 9th Regiment. Reorganized in September as the 
17th, its designation was later changed to the 27th. Men of this unit 
were recruited in Orange, Guilford, Wayne, Pitt, Lenoir, Perquimans, 
and Jones counties. It was assigned to General R. Ransom's, J.G. 
Walker's, and Cooke's Brigade. After fighting at New Bern, the 27th 
saw action in the Seven Days' Battles and at Sharpsburg and 
Fredericksburg. During the spring and summer of 1863 it served in 
North Carolina, South Carolina, and in the Richmond area. The unit 
continued the fight at Bristoe, The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and 
Cold Harbor, and later endured the hardships of the Petersburg siege 
south of the James River. It ended the war at Appomattox. It had 6 
wounded at Malvern Hill, lost sixty-three percent of the 325 engaged 
at Sharpsburg, and had 2 killed and 13 wounded at Fredericksburg. 
Seventy percent of the 416 at Bristoe were disabled, and when the 
regiment surrendered, it had 9 officers and 103 men. The field officers 
were Colonels John R. Cooke, J.A. Gilmer, Jr., George B. Singeltary, 
John Sloan, and George F. Whitfield; Lieutenant Colonels R.W. Singeltary, 
Thomas C. Singeltary, and Joseph C. Webb; and Major Calvin Herring.

George F. Whitfield, Captain
Resided in Lenoir County where he enlisted at age 31,. Elected Captain 
on April 17, 1861. Present or accounted for until appointed Major on 
November 1, 1862, and transferred to the Field and Staff of this regiment. 
Later served as Colonel of the regiment.


Edward G. Wooten, Captain
Resided in Lenoir County where he enlisted at age 24, May 6, 1862, for the 
war. Mustered in as Private and was elected 2nd Lieutenant on September 
22, 1862. Promoted to Captain on December 1, 1862. Wounded in the 
shoulder at Fredricksburg, Virginia, December 13, 1862.     Returned to 
duty on an unspecified date. Present or accounted for until paroled at 
Farmville, Virginia, April 11-21, 1865.


Wooten Bizzell, Lieutenant
Resided in Wayne County and enlisted in Lenoir County at age 32, April 
17, 1861. Mustered in with an unspecified rank and was promoted to 
Sergeant on May 1, 1861. Elected 3rd Lieutenant in August, 1862, and 
was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on September 18, 1862. Promoted to 
1st Lieutenant on October 14, 1863. Captured in hospital at Richmond, 
Virginia, April 3, 1865.


Louis Foss, Lieutenant
Resided in Lenoir County where he enlisted at age 26, April 17, 1861. 
Mustered in as Private and was promoted to Sergeant on February 18, 
1862. Reduced to ranks in May-June, 1862, but was elected 2nd 
Lieutenant on or about October 14, 1862. Paroled at Burkeville Junction, 
Virginia, April 14-17, 1865.


Thomas W. Rouse, 2nd Lieutenant
Resided in Lenoir County where he enlisted at age 30. Elected 3rd 
Lieutenant on April 17, 1861, and was elected 2nd Lieutenant on or 
about August 22, 1861. Present or accounted for until he died in a 
hospital at Petersburg, Virginia, August 6, 1862, of "bilious fever".


Benjamin Walters, 1st Lieutenant
Resided in Lenoir County where he enlisted at age 32. Elected 2nd 
Lieutenant on April 17, 1861. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on September 
18, 1862. Present or accounted for until captured in an unspecified  
engagement in September, 1862. Confined at Fort Delaware, Delaware, 
until transferred to Aiken's Landing, James River, Virginia, October 2, 1862, 
for exchange. Declared exhanged at Aiken's Landing on November 10, 1862. 
Died on October 16, 1863. Place and cause of death not reported. 


John Pugh Wooten, 1st Lieutenant
Resided in Lenoir County where he enlisted at age 35. Elected 1st 
Lieutenant on April 17, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded 
at Sharpsburg, Maryland, September 17, 1862. Died at Sharpsburg on 
September 18, 1862, of wounds.

Born in Greene County and resided in Lenoir County where he was by 
occupation a shoemaker prior to enlisting in Lenoir County at age 25, 
May 6, 1862. Detailed as a shoemaker during much of the war. Reported 
on duty with Company B, 2nd Battalion Virginia Infantry (Local Defense) in 
June 1863, , and July, 1864. Deserted to the enemy on or about December 
27, 1864. Confined at Washington, D.C., until on or about January 3, 1865, 
after taking the Oath of Allegiance.


ALDRIDGE, BENNETT FRANKLIN
Resided in Lenoir County where he enlisted at age 18, April 17, 1861. 
Wounded at Bristoe Station, Virginia, October 14, 1863. Returned to duty 
on an unspecified date. Present or accounted for until promoted to Musician 
in September-October 1864, and transferred to the regimental band.


ALDRIDGE, JESSE B., Private
Resided in Lenoir County where he enlisted on April 17, 1861. Reported 
on detail as a shoemaker from April 1864, through February, 1865. Took 
the Oath of Allegiance at Richmond, Virginia, April 11, 1865.


ALDRIDGE, JOSEPH, Private
Resided in Lenoir County where he enlisted at age 19, May 6, 1862, for the 
war. Present or accounted for through February, 1865. Captured by the 
enemy on an unspecified date. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, until 
released on June 23, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance. North Carolina 
pension records indicate he was wounded at Orange Court House, Virginia 1863.


ALDRIDGE, RICHARD H., Private
Resided in Lenoir County where he enlisted at age 21, April 17, 1861. 
Hospitalized at Charlottesville, Virginia, October 18, 1863, with a gunshot 
wound. Place and date wounded not reported. Furloughed on November 3, 
1863. No further records.


BARROW, JAMES F., Private
Resided in Lenoir County where he enlisted at age 18, April 17, 1861. 
Present or accounted for until he died at "Camp Jackson" on July 10, 1862. 
Cause of death not reported.


BARROW JESSEE H., Private
Resided in Lenoir County where he enlisted at age 29, April 25, 1861. 
Wounded in the right elbow at Bristoe Station, Virginia, October 14, 1863. 
Reported absent wounded through December, 1864. Returned to duty in 
January-February, 1865, but was retired to Invalid Corps on March 6, 1865, 
by reason of disability.


BARROW, SIMON P., Private
Resided in Lenoir County and enlisted at New Bern at age 22, June 20, 1861. 
Killed at Wilderness, Virginia on or about May 5, 1864.


BELL, GEORGE, Private
Enlisted at Fort Lane on August 31, 1861. Discharged on April 3, 1863. 
Reason discharged not reported. Later served as Corporal in D Company, 
1st Battalion N.C. Local Defense Troops.


BELL, JAMES H., Private
Resided in Lenoir County and enlisted at Coosawhatchie, South Carolina, 
at age 17, March 3, 1863, for the war. Wounded in the left arm at or near 
Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, on or about May 8, 1864. Returned to 
duty prior to January 1, 1865. Present or accounted for until captured at 
Hatcher's Run, Virginia, March 31, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout, 
Maryland, until released on June 23, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.


BELL, JOSHUA H., Sergeant
Resided in Lenoir County where he enlisted at age 25, April 17, 1861. 
Mustered in a Private and was promoted to Corporal on May 1, 1861. 
Promoted to Sergeant in March-April 1862, but was reduced to ranks in 
May-June, 1862. Reappointed Sergeant on September 1, 1862. Present or 
accounted for until killed "in Virginia" in June, 1864.


BENTON, JAMES, Sergeant
Resided in Lenoir County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in 
Lenoir County at age 40, April 17, 1861.Mustered in with an unspecified rank 
and was promoted to Sergeant on May 1, 1861. Present or accounted for 
until he died "at home" on February 18, 1862, of "typhoid fever".


BIZZELL, WILLIAM B., Private
Resided in Duplin County and enlisted in Lenoir County at age 18, June 3, 
1863, for the war. Captured at Farmville, Virginia, April 6, 1865. Confined at 
Newport News, Virginia, until released on June 27, 1865, after taking the 
Oath of Allegiance.


BLIZZARD, JOHN M., Private
Born in Lenoir County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in 
Wake County on August 3, 1861. Present or accounted for until he died 
"at home" on or about June 26, 1862. Cause of death not reported. Death 
records dated July 23, 1862, give his age as 30.


BOLDING, SPENCER, Private
Resided in Lenoir County where he enlisted at age 34, April 17, 1861. Killed at 
Wilderness, Virginia, on or about May 5, 1864.


BOON, CALEB, Private
Resided in Lenoir County where he enlisted at age 23, April 17, 1861. 
Present or accounted for until captured at New Bern on March 14, 1862. 
Confined at Fort Columbus, New York Harbor. Paroled and transferred to 
Aiken's Landing, James River, Virginia, where he was received July 12, 1862, 
for exchange. Declared exchanged at Aiken's Landing on August 5, 1862. 
Present or accounted for through October, 1862. No further records.


BRAXTON, ISAAC B., Private
Resided in Lenoir County where he enlisted at age 20, May 6, 1862, for the war. 
Wounded at Wilderness, Virginia, on or about May 5, 1864. Returned to duty 
prior to June 3, 1864, when he was wounded in the left shoulder at Cold Harbor, 
Virginia. Returned to duty in January-February, 1865. Present or accounted 
through February, 1865.


BROCK, JOSEPH, Private
Resided in Duplin County and enlisted in Lenoir County at age 34, May 6, 
1862, for the war. Present or accounted for through June, 1863. Deserted on 
an unspecified date. Apprehended on an unspecified date and was 
court-martialed "for deserting his comrades, and taking up arms on the 
enemy's side." Hanged at Kinston on February 15, 1864.


BROWN, POWELL, Private
Resided in Lenoir County where he enlisted at age 34, April 17, 1861. 
Present or accounted for until wounded at Sharpsburg, Maryland, 
September 17, 1862. Returned to duty on an unspecified date. Deserted on 
December 8, 1864, but returned to duty on January 27, 1865. Deserted 
again on February 7, 1865.

Resided in Lenoir County where he enlisted at age 33, April 17, 1861. 
Deserted on May 30, 1862. Returned to duty on an unspecified date.

Resided in Lenoir County where he enlisted at age 23, April 25, 1861. 
Mustered in as Private and was promoted to Corporal on May 1, 1862. 
Hospitalized at Charlottesville, Virginia, October 18, 1863, with a gunshot 
wound. Place and date wounded not reported. Returned to duty on October 
28, 1863. Promoted to Sergeant on October 1, 1864. Captured at or near 
Sutherland's Station, Virginia, April 2, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout,

Resided in Lenoir County where he enlisted at age 24, April 20, 1861. 
Mustered in as Private and was promoted to Corporal on July 10, 1861. 
Promoted to Sergeant on May 1, 1862. Present or accounted for until 
wounded in the right arm and captured at Sharpsburg, Maryland, 
September 17, 1862. Hospitalized at Frederick, Maryland, until transferred to 
Fort Machinery, Maryland. Paroled at Fort machinery and transferred to Aiken's 
Landing, James River, Virginia, where he was received October 30, 1862, for 
exchange. Declared exchanged at Aiken's Landing on November 10, 1862. 
Reduced to ranks on an unspecified date. Reported absent wounded until 
July 6, 1864, when he was retired to the Invalid Corps by reason of disability.

Virginia, March 3, 1865, with a gunshot wound of the right side. Place and 
date wounded not reported. Captured in hospital at Richmond, Virginia, April 
3, 1865, and was paroled on or about April 22, 1865.

1862. Discharged on April 12, 1863, by reason of disability from wounds.

Hospitalized at Charlottesville, Virginia, December 1, 1863, with a gunshot

December 12, 1863. Reported on detached service at Richmond, Virginia,

Resided in Lenoir County where he enlisted at age 28, April 17, 1861. Present 
or accounted for until he died in hospital at Petersburg, Virginia, July 20, 1862, 
of "diarrhoea chronica." 


KENNEDY, JOHN T., Private
Born in Lenoir County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in 
Lenoir County on April 17, 1861. Present or accounted for until he died at 
Camp Mangum on August 29, 1861, of "typhoid fever." Death records give 
his age as 21.


KENNEDY, ROBERT H., Private
Resided in Lenoir County where he enlisted at age 21, April 17, 1861. 
Wounded in the left thigh at Bristoe Station, Virginia, October 14, 1863. 
Left leg amputated at the thigh. Reported absent wounded until August 17, 
1864, when he was retired to the Invalid Corps.


KOONCE, JOHN E., Private
Enlisted at Orange Court House, Virginia, at age 17, April 17, 1864, for the 
war. Wounded at Wilderness, Virginia, on or about May 5, 1864. Hospitalized 
at Richmond, Virginia. Furloughed on September 2, 1864. Company muster 
roll dated January-February, 1865, inidcates that he had not been heard from 
since the date of his furlough. North Carolina pension records indicate that 
he survived the war.


LASSITER, STEPHEN, Private
Resided in Lenoir County where he enlisted at age 28, April 17, 1861.

February 11, 1865, when he returned to duty. Captured at Farmville,

released on June 16, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

WOOTEN, Shade, Sergeant
Born in Lenoir County and resided in Greene County where he was by 
occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Lenoir County at age 21, May 6, 
1862, for the war. Mustered in as Private and was promoted to Sergeant in 
November, 1862-Ocotber, 1864. Wounded in the finger in Virginia in June, 
1864. Returned to duty in June, 1864. Returned to duty prior to August 15, 
1864, when he was wounded in the head in battle near Petersburg, Virginia. 
Reported absent wounded until January 20, 1865, when he was discharged by 
reason of "a gunshot     wound...fracturing the left parietal bone, severing the 
lingitudinal sinus, occasioning partial paralysis of the left side. He is troubled 
with severest cerebral pain and is unable to undergo any exertion without 
producing mental disturbance".
